We are looking for a reliable Cleaner / Caretaker to help look after our historic gallery building.

  • Location: Newlyn Art Gallery
  • Hours: Permanent, part-time, 10–15 hours per week
  • Salary: £6,349 – £8,893 pa (£12.21 per hour)
  • Reports to: Deputy Director & Operations Manager
  • Deadline: Sun 21 Sep 2025

This is a great opportunity for someone who takes pride in their work and wants to play a key role in supporting the gallery team, making sure the building is welcoming, safe, and well-presented for all our visitors.

You will work 10–15 hours per week, typically Tue to Sat, 08.00 – 10.00, with the possibility of additional hours during the summer months. Your responsibilities will include daily cleaning, general upkeep, and basic maintenance, as well as ensuring the safety and security of the building and surrounding grounds.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Carry out daily cleaning of gallery spaces and communal areas, including toilets, corridors, the Studio space, and Front of House, maintaining excellent standards of cleanliness.
  • Dispose of waste materials safely and hygienically, ensuring timely collection.
  • Act as a key-holder: opening the gallery each day and checking intruder and fire alarms are functioning correctly.
  • Order and manage general cleaning supplies, and liaise with contractors as required.
  • Complete weekly health & safety checks, including emergency lighting, fire alarms, extinguishers, and legionella checks.
  • Keep gullies and drains clear, and ensure gallery grounds are tidy and litter-free.
  • Maintain safe pedestrian access to the gallery, including snow clearance and gritting in adverse weather.
  • Carry out light gardening to keep the grounds tidy and accessible.
  • Undertake minor maintenance and repairs as required.
  • Follow all Health & Safety requirements, legislation, and gallery policies.
  • Understand and comply with the gallery’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
