In her exhibition notes Lubaina Himid asks how we can ‘understand a place as it is experienced by those who know it well: what do they reveal and what will they share?’ whilst we ourselves may still try and understand our own processes of knowing a place.

Tracy Hill’s practice focuses
on the intersection between our digital and aesthetic worlds: a hybrid space where technological control meets emotion and memory of the human experience of landscape. In conversation with Himid she will give insights into her most recent projects on wetland landscapes, linking into the exhibition themes as Himid evokes them, ‘the places on the edge of time and memory and the invisible layers underneath.’.

TIDAL OBSERVATORY TALK: Richard Cockram

Newlyn Tidal Observatory was established to determine mean sea level as a starting point for measuring height and levelling throughout the UK, and provides some of the longest sea level records ever kept. Hear from Richard Cockram, the vice-chairman of the Newlyn Archive, on the history and importance of the observatory and from artist Rebecca Chesney on how a visit there inspired new work for Invisible Narratives.

TALK: Georg Weckwerth on TONSPUR and sound in art

Georg Weckwerth is a German independent artist-curator, exhibition maker and producer with a particular focus on sound in art. He is founder and artistic director of TONSPUR Kunstverein Wien and curator of TONSPUR_passage, a curated programme of sound works in a permanent public space in The Museum Quarter in Vienna.

Georg will discuss his work as a curator, with a focus on some specific projects in the TONSPUR series including the development and subsequent tour of Magda Stawarska-Beavan’s TONSPUR 59, Krakow to Venice in 12 hours (2013).

KRAKOW TO VENICE IN 12 HOURS (2013)

Whilst the control of noise pollution is a common concern for today’s architects and urban planners, it is true that the component sounds of a city are an integral part of its identity. The specific acoustics of buildings and the spaces around them offer points of orientation on any urban journey. Kraków to Venice in 12 hours maps a journey across Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria and Slovenia to Italy, visiting Krakow, Katowice, Bielsko-Biala, Ostrava, Brno, Bratislava, Vienna, Graz, Maribor, Ljubljana, Trieste and Venice, attempting to capture the unique sonic identities of the 12 cities travelled through, searching for similarities and differences. It acts as a personal and subjective audio travel guide and a clock for the journey, mapping the movement through geographical locations over the passage of time.

Curated by Lubaina Himid, winner of the 2017 Turner Prize, Invisible Narratives explores the work of three artists, Magda Stawarska-Beavan, Rebecca Chesney and Lubaina Himid, who consider the poetic investigation of place, space and time, through painting, sound installation and place-based research.

Drawing on the connections between their work in the exhibition the three artists will investigate further questions of place and memory, ‘trying to understand how you know a place well, but that you don’t necessarily know how this can be.’.

WALK & TALK: IDENTIFYING NATURALISED PLANT SPECIES WITH EMMA GUNN

Emma Gunn is an expert forager based in Cornwall. She works at the Eden Project as Seasonal Displays Supervisor, where she creates show gardens, seasonal plant-based exhibits, and does floristry. She has been there for 20 years after studying garden design. She has a passion for plants with a use, which includes edible and medicinal plants, as well as aesthetics.

During this walk, Emma will share her knowledge and enthusiasm for plant identification and foraging, with a focus on coastal plants and seaweeds, giving participants the confidence to explore the particular flavours that are available on our doorstep.

£7.20, incl picnic box lunch.
