SUMMER ACTIVITIES FOR CHILDREN & FAMILIES

THINGS TO DO THIS SUMMER

Are you looking for affordable family activities during the summer holidays, maybe something a little different?

We are delighted to offer a range of fun, creative things to do for children and families this summer, including rainy-day activities.

CRAFT SESSIONS

On Monday afternoons in August, we have Make & Myth craft sessions for 6 to 11 year-olds, led by artist and educator Maya Ronchetti.

Each session will begin with a Cornish myth and be based around a poem written by Adrian Rodda; a Cornish poet who writes poems based on local folk tales and Cornish myths. This will be followed by a craft activity relating to the themes of the tale. Children are encouraged to bring their imagination, wear old clothes, and be open to the magic.

DIGITAL WORKSHOPS

Also in August, we have two workshops for 10 to 15 year-olds with Adam Goodwin, our in-house Digital Producer.

On 9 Aug find out what makes a good interview, and develop skills behind and in front of the camera. This session will explore camera operation, sound recording, interview techniques, and storytelling using high-quality film production equipment.

On 23 Aug our Filmmaking Workshop will help you develop skills in filmmaking and immersive experiences using a state-of-the-art 360 camera. You will begin to explore how to think about storytelling in new and innovative formats, capturing the world around you and translating that into invigorating content.

Adam’s workshops coincide with the day’s last screening of STEPHEN, enabling any accompanying grown-ups to see the exhibition in the main gallery.

All of the above workshops take place in The Engine Room at The Exchange and are great options if you’re looking for things to do inside, as they’re ideal for rainy day activities.

LITTLE ARTISTS

For our very youngest visitors, we have our popular summer Mini and Little Artist sessions on Thursday mornings, during August at Newlyn Art Gallery. Fun and creative session with the friendly guidance of Annie Vigar, who has six years experience running tailored art sessions for babies, pre-schoolers, and primary-age children. Expect to get messy!

SUMMER FAIR

At the end of August, our Summer Fair at Newlyn Art Gallery has something for all the family. Along with a Makers Market and craft stalls in the gallery, there are activities on Newlyn Green throughout the afternoon, including a Rubbish Photo Booth, activities for children of all ages, plus food from Fika and Newlyn Fermentary. There will be a performance by JOIN the WAD, contemporary Morris Dancing Troop, followed by live music from WILD OYO in the garden, or in The Studio if the weather is bad.

FREE ACTIVITIES

At both galleries, you will always find free DiY craft activities to entertain younger visitors. For the summer we have a selection of board games at The Exchange, and at Newlyn Art Gallery we have drawing sheets and fuzzy felt. The Exchange Café has a dedicated family area, with books, toys and games, and extra soft furnishings to make a cosy, fun space for you and your children.

See events listings for more details and how to book workshops etc.

Look out for details of our family-friendly Silent Disco at Newlyn Art Gallery on 17 Aug. More details coming soon.
