The Exchange

A week-long exhibition at The Exchange inviting visitors to look at Penzance through different lenses.

A number of historical and contemporary films which explore different aspects of Penzance are presented in the gallery. While by no means an exhaustive collection of films about Penzance, the ones we are showing highlight a wide range of local topics from extreme weather conditions to gardening, to homelessness.

Alongside the films, there are a number of opportunities for visitors to leave their memories and thoughts of Penzance. We will use the responses collected to help inform and identify topics for future locally engaged arts projects.

Newlyn Art Gallery and The Exchange is committed to exploring and testing ways in which contemporary arts practice can engage with local themes, people and places to help to create and support healthy, creative communities.

This exhibition continues the work we established through A Postcard to Penzance which, since 2013, has invited people to contribute their voice to the future of our town. We have collected around 1,000 postcards with the dreams, ideas and suggestions of Penzance residents and visitors, which have been exhibited and consulted by Cornwall Council and the Penzance Business Improvement District in their policy making.
