NEWLYN: A WALKING TOUR WITH NEWLYN ART GALLERY DIRECTOR

A thriving fishing port and home to contemporary artists, our tour will cover Newlyn today as well as looking back at its rich industrial and cultural heritage.
Newlyn Art Gallery is a Cornish institution, with a history that is inseparably linked to the village and communities that surround it. We invite you to join us on a very special tour of the village with our Director, James Green and Kathy Hill from the Gallery team, and a Newlyn resident for nearly 30 years.
Let us take you on a back-streets tour of the village, meeting artists, and discovering Newlyn’s fascinating, and often hidden, history.
Learn how the village has been a home to artists for more than 150 years. We’ll introduce you to leading artists practicing here today and visit historic studios that have been in continual use for more than 130 years. Learn about Newlyn’s Tidal Observatory, and a century of tidal data that informs cutting-edge climate research to this day, and the contemporary artists it has inspired. Hear hidden insights into the life of the gallery and how artists working in Newlyn today are influenced by their surroundings, often in very unexpected ways.
The tour will begin at Newly Art Gallery at 10:30, with coffee and cake in our beautiful Garden Café. The day will close back at the gallery at 16.00.
This is a walking tour, with frequent stops on the way. Newlyn is built into the hillside, meaning there are steep side streets, steps, and slippery areas around the harbour. If you have access needs, please let us know and we’ll do our best to accommodate them. Please wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for all weather conditions. The tour will go ahead in all but the worst weather. A little bit of Cornish mizzle won’t stop us!
£120 per person, booking essential. Maximum of ten places per tour.
Refreshments and lunch are provided, but please bring a bottle of water with you.
