HOSPITAL ROOMS AND CORNWALL PARTNERSHIP NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

An exhibition featuring work by Anna Barriball, Sovay Berriman, Maria Christoforidou, Phillippa Clayden, Janet Holland, Chantal Joffe, Alvin Kofi, Abigail Reynolds, Ro Robertson, Ben Sanderson, Melanie Stidolph, Viviane Vaux and Lucy Willow.

Hospital Rooms was founded in 2016 in response to the need to bring a greater sense of humanity and hope into the spaces that care for people at the most vulnerable times in their lives. The charity exists to challenge an outdated approach to mental healthcare in the UK, where people living with the most difficult of mental health diagnoses are often cared for in environments that can feel frightening and harsh. Recognising the immense power of art to provide solace, provoke thought and engender human connection, Hospital Rooms collaborates with NHS Trusts, service users and acclaimed artists to catalyse a fundamental shift in the way that mental health hospitals look and feel, foregrounding the presence of art and creativity and transforming wards into welcoming, soothing and beautiful spaces.

Since March 2023, Hospital Rooms has been working with Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust to bring creativity and culture to Cornwall’s inpatient mental health wards. Twelve new artworks have been permanently installed across four clinical wards following a programme of creative workshops both on-site and at local cultural venues including Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange and Tate St Ives. This exhibition celebrates the completion of the project and the beginning of a longer-term aim to put creativity and culture at the heart of mental health care in Cornwall.

The artists involved in this project have worked closely with service users and staff to transform the wards into spaces of hope and promise through the installation of original and thought-provoking artworks.
