A SERIES OF FREE TEXTILE WORKSHOPS WITH VICKI AIMERS

Mrs Ellen Dick’s Industrial Needlecraft Class at the turn of the 20th century will be the starting point for a celebration of inspirational teachers and an exploration of traditional skills in this series of practical textile workshops led by artist Vicki Aimers who invites you to join her for four ‘standards’, in stitch.

WED 5 FEB
STANDARD 1: REMEMBERING
Working with paint and texture you will create interesting surfaces on plain and patterned fabrics to stitch into in subsequent sessions.

WED 12 FEB
STANDARD 2: RECORDING
In this session, you will create stencils informed by needlework techniques and historical tools to reflect Mrs Dick’s approach to design within the applied arts.

WED 19 FEB
STANDARD 3: MAKING
A playful session exploring collage techniques and a range of fabrics to create compositions inspired by our memories of times at school.

WED 26 FEB
STANDARD 4: SHARING
Exploring printed text on fabric with printing blocks, both premade and of your own design. This will be the final technique to complete the artist book.

FREE, but booking is essential as places are limited.
No previous textile experience is needed.
Tea and biscuits will be provided, and you’re welcome to bring a packed lunch.

This is a series of FREE practical textile workshops, with each session building from the previous one. You can book individual workshops, but you are encouraged to book all four.

The sole surviving textile piece from Mrs Dick’s Needlecraft Class, created by a young Newlyn girl named Aida Harvey James in the early 1900s, is now preserved in the archive of Penlee House Gallery & Museum. For Social Fabric, contemporary textile artist Elizabeth Loveday, based in Penzance, was commissioned to delve into the history of this remarkable work.
