Fashion Fictions invites participants to imagine contemporary realities in parallel worlds – worlds where people live differently with their clothes. These speculative worlds diverged from our own at some point in history, taking a different path toward sustainability and creativity.
Founded in 2020 by Dr Amy Twigger Holroyd, Associate Professor of Fashion and Sustainability at Nottingham School of Art & Design, the project encourages participants to envision positive and compelling futures that prioritise individual fulfilment, social justice, and environmental sustainability.
Drawing inspiration from the themes of Social Fabric, students from Falmouth University’s Fashion & Textile Institute have selected specific Fashion Fiction worlds to explore. Each student has created a garment or artefact that embodies the values and practices of their chosen world. These imagined worlds are incredibly diverse but share a unifying goal: fostering more sustainable and fulfilling ways of living with our clothes. Through this process, students are encouraged to envision, experiment with, and enact alternative fashion futures as a creative approach to real-world change.
