The students spent 12 weeks responding to the brief, asking the question Are We Determined By Our Surroundings? They were encouraged to experiment with process as they formulated their response with each piece of work including a minimum of one form of print. Printing methods used include include texi print, silk screen print, sublimation print, block print, lino print and emulsion print. They also used a range of experimental techniques, such as burning into the work, embellishing on a machine, and free machine embroidery.

As part of their research, the students investigated artists included in our spring programme, including Abel Rodriguez in Gäa: Holistic Science And Wisdom Tradition at The Exchange, and Lubaina Himid in the forthcoming show Invisible Narratives at Newlyn Art Gallery, along with textile artist Joanna Kinnersly-Taylor and other artists of their choosing.

They decided how they wished to present their work, before handing it over to our team of technicians to install.

Humphry Davy students hope you enjoy some of the different themes that emerged when exploring Are We Determined By Our Surroundings?
