We’re delighted to announce that Newlyn Art Gallery & The Exchange has successfully qualified as a 2024 Active Member of the Gallery Climate Coalition (GCC)!
This recognition reflects our ongoing commitment to reducing our environmental impact and embedding sustainability across everything we do.
WHAT DOES ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP MEAN?
Active Membership is awarded to GCC members who demonstrate that they’ve implemented environmentally responsible best practices in line with GCC guidance. To achieve this, organisations must take four key actions:
- MEASURE IMPACT
We have been working with the University of Exeter to produce an Emissions Report and Decarbonisation Plan, which now form the foundation of our environmental action plan.
- TAKE ACTION
Our dedicated Green Team, made up of volunteers, staff, and trustees, meets regularly to consider everything the gallery does through the lens of the climate crisis.
- PUBLICLY COMMIT
You can read our full Environmental Policy & Aims on our website, outlining our principles and commitments.
- REVIEW AND REFLECT
We hold quarterly Green Team meetings and report regularly on our progress as part of our Arts Council England Environmental Responsibility and Julie’s Bicycle commitments, ensuring the conversation remains active and leads to meaningful action.
WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR US?
Active Membership is not a certification of sustainability and doesn’t claim that we’re doing things perfectly. Like many organisations, we’re on a journey, measuring, reporting, reducing our impact, setting science-based targets, and taking every action we can.

ABOUT THE GALLERY CLIMATE COALITION
GCC is an international community of arts organisations working together to reduce our sector’s environmental impacts. Their primary goal is to reduce CO₂e emissions by at least 50% by 2030 and promote a zero-waste approach.
