Continuing our series of posts recommending other galleries to visit, places to go, and things to do in Penzance and Newlyn.

If you’ve been to Newlyn Art Gallery, what else can you do in Newlyn? With galleries, second-hand shops, amazing places to eat, and more, there is so much to do in Newlyn. For this selection, Kathy Hill, our Marketing & Communications Manager – and long-time resident of Newlyn – suggests some of her favourites.

NEWLYN CHEESE & CHARCUTERIE

Pop in get a selection of cheese, some olives, and a loaf of Vicky’s bread and you’re set for a walk along the coast path towards Mousehole, stopping to eat your picnic while enjoying the views across to St Michael’s Mount and around to The Lizard. Or simply have a leisurely mooch about, walking along Newlyn Green, or up to the old harbour. If you venture up Church Street, you’ll come across The Honesty Box, selling homemade bread, cakes and biscuits. Perfect to round off your picnic, or to take home and enjoy with a cuppa.  And if cheese isn’t your thing, you can always get a ready-made sandwich from Aunty May’s.

 

NEWLYN FILMHOUSE

If the weather isn’t great for walking, how about a film at the amazing Filmhouse? Converted from an 1876-built granite fish cellar and smokery, the building itself is a treat. The Filmhouse is a two-screen Curzon Connect cinema showing mainstream blockbusters as well as live events, world cinema and arthouse films. Films are shown every day, both daytime and evening, so there should be something to fit in with your visit to the gallery. And it wouldn’t be a cinema without ice cream; luckily the Filmhouse stocks delicious Moomaid of Zennor ice creams to take in with you.

NEWLYN FERMENTARY

If you’re after small-batch, hand-crafted fermented foods using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, Newlyn Fermentary is the place to go, stocking kraut, kimchi, kefir, and more. You can’t miss it, it’s opposite the fish market and has an incredible display of houseplants in the window. Newlyn Fermentary was set up by Ray and her partner Ben, who is also the plant expert. They’re not open every day so it’s worth checking opening times, and making a special visit. If they are closed when you’re in Newlyn, you can buy Newlyn Fermentary products from the deli at 45 Queen Street, off Chapel Street in Penzance, and less than two minutes walk from The Exchange.
