18 Mar — 17 Apr 2017

Newlyn Art Gallery

Inspired by Eastern European clubhouses for workers, Newlyn Art Gallery will be transformed into an establishment of recreational activity. Hosted by a different Cultural Secretary each week, The Palace of Culture will nourish both body and mind with workshops, performance and other stimulating pursuits designed to fight cultureless leisure.

Each of the four weeks will be programmed by a different Cultural Secretary who will commission a varied selection of activity which could include do it yourself hobby groups, sports, dance, collecting, arts, films, music, literature and amateur theatre.

  • Week One UNCollective
  • Week Two Keiken Collective
  • Week Three Rosie Taylor with Flock Dance
  • Week Four Ella Frears

Could you be a Cultural Secretary?

The Palace of Culture will nourish both body and mind with workshops, performances and other stimulating pursuits designed to fight cultureless leisure.

Each of the four weeks will be programmed by a different Cultural Secretary who will commission a varied selection of activity, which could include Do It Yourself Hobby Groups, Sports, Dance, Collecting, Arts, Films, Music, Literature or Amateur Theatre.

The first two weeks of The Palace of Culture will be our final contribution to the Tate St Ives’ Circuit programme - Circuit is an artistic programme delivered by and for young people.

The target audience for all four weeks therefore will be 15 – 25 year olds. Content of all sessions should be aimed at that age range and priority will be given to them for any sessions that may have a capacity limit.

The dates of each slot:

18 – 24 March
25 – 31 March
1 – 7 April [School Holiday]
8 - 17 April [School holiday + Easter bank holiday]

email Cat Gibbard with your ideas and a CV by 9.00 Monday 9 Jan 2017.
