Newlyn Art Gallery
In its eighth year, Newlyn Art Festival continues to bring together events and exhibitions involving artists and makers in Newlyn. This year there will be makers and craftspeople working within Newlyn Art Gallery, Artist residencies throughout the village and a range of events at various venues in the village including Newlyn Art Gallery, The Centre, Fisherman’s Mission and the Tolcarne Inn. From 4 – 11 October, for one week only, some of Newlyn’s finest makers and craftspeople will leave their studios and workshops to work within Newlyn Art Gallery. From net makers to jewellers and creel makers to rag ruggers, visitors to the gallery will be able to see work in progress as well as finished pieces. In an exciting departure, this year sees four artists working in the community as they take up residence at some unusual locations in the village.
Jess Polglase photographs site-specific ceilings and then reduces them to pure line. For the Festival her lines, taken from Newlyn Fish Market ceiling, will be viewed from both the inside and outside of Lewis’s fish & chip shop windows, creating two different backgrounds to the work. Jess will be installing her work on Sunday 5 October, 9am-4pm and it will be on show for the duration of the Festival. Tim Ridley will be creating charcoal drawings In the Swordfish pub, capturing local people in mythological guise, with an uncanny feel, but with humour. Biljana Lipic will move around the village to find the fishermen in their working and leisure environments. Using photography she will capture the fishermen’s individual characters and life stories, as embodied through their hands. Faye Dobinson will be sketching, talking and finding out about tides, charts and other means of navigation from visiting fishermen and the regulars at The Mission. She will make small art works, ten of which will be sent off in bottles (akin to a ‘message in a bottle’). The opening event will be held at Newlyn Art Gallery on Friday 3 October from 7pm. There will be live music from Baldrick’s Plan, a pay bar and Mexican street food in the garden from Little Wonder Café. Admission is free and all are welcome.
