The Exchange

An exhibition of contemporary art by 24 women artists reflecting on the 40 years since the Sex Discrimination Act.

Curated by Day+Gluckman it presents a snapshot of a woman’s place in British society. Body, femininity, sex, motherhood, economic and political status are explored through film, photography, sculpture, performance and painting. Works by more than 20 women artists reflect the changes in art practice, within the context of sexual and gender equality, since the introduction of the Act.

2015 marked 40 years since the introduction of the Sex Discrimination Act in the UK, a law that aimed to change the landscape of our society. Curators Day+Gluckman have been exploring these themes for their project A Woman’s Place which questions and addresses the contemporary position of women in our creative, historical and cultural landscape through contemporary art.

Works from the four decades include The Last Gaze (recently purchased by Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art and kindly loaned for this exhibition) by celebrated feminist artist Margaret Harrison, and Sonia Boyce’s Devotional Wallpaper, an on-going project which features the names of 200 black British women in the music industry, cited by members of her local community.

A selection of Helen Chadwick’s seminal Wreaths To Pleasure (1992 – 1994) will be exhibited alongside recent Goldsmith’s graduate Alice May Williams, who will present We Can Do It!, a video work created from the ‘googling’ of the words ‘Rosie the Riveter’, the American headscarf wearing World War II icon.
